Phobos Mayan Fear The Domain Trilogy Steve Alten Books
Don't get me wrong. This book does have moments where it works remarkably well. The arrangement is intriguing. The playing around with alternate is interesting. However, in comparison to the previous books, it just falls flat. If there is more written in the Domain storyline, as this book does end with a "to be continued," then Phobos might be better than I initially thought. However, if there is not a fourth book coming, it would be best to read just Domain and Resurrection.

Phobos Mayan Fear The Domain Trilogy Steve Alten Books Reviews
I like the story in theory, but the author almost tries to lose you with all the science terms and theorems, you almost have to have a degree in string theory to understand the whole book. A lot of skim reading happened to finish.
Good 2012 series with a strong alien theme, but a lot of real life anchors. Makes you want to read all three in the series.
No dislikes...just hard to read
still waiting on the rest
Very smooth writing - great transitions and integrated sub-plots. Be aware that this is the third book in a series of three (The Domain Trilogy) Domain; Resurrection; and Phobos. Try to read them in order - although any one book is a great story unto itself.
I'm torn because there are aspects of this book that I liked and there are aspects that I didn't like. I loved Domain when I read it 5 or 6 years ago but this 3rd in the series just was a little bit too all over the place for me. I like Alten's writing and The Loch is one of my favorite books I've ever read (and I've read a lot) but I feel like there was too much crammed into this book for it to really completely flow smoothly. I would start reading a chapter and have to pause and say "wait, what?" All of a sudden the characters would be across the planet and weeks down the road and thrown right into the middle of a conflict without really bringing the reader along with the characters. I'm also a little upset that Alten just sent a character back in time so he could change what he thinks the 2012 Doomsday event will be caused by and then re-writes parts of the first novel because sending that character back in time messed up all the past events and now everything is different. For someone reading a series it just sort of makes the first two books pointless and you even state that if the current situations were around when you wrote Domain this is the book you would have written in the first place.
I will say that I have no problem with Alten's politics and personal beliefs that he writes into his books and I totally agree with a lot of them so that is a non factor in any negative feelings I have about his books. I just wished this book was flushed out a little better. There is so much there in only 380+ pages that the story got a little disjointed for me. But with that said the book was a page turner and I didn't know where it was going to go next. Would rate a 3.5 but since no half ratings on I give it 4 stars.
Too much information. When you're writing fiction, any factual or expository information should be expressed briefly enough to let the reader know what he needs to know while letting the story flow. That's not the case here, or in the preceding book of this series. The author literally loses the plot. Or, more accurately, the reader does. If you need to set the narrative flow aside as often as Alten feels he needs to, then you're not writing thrilling fiction.
I'd recommend people give this book a wide berth. It waffles on and on (and on and .... ) and becomes so tedious it just disappears up its own arse.
