"To live without risk is to risk not living". This book was recommended to me by a seatmate on a flight. Not an overtly in your face religious zealot but a person who had claimed to have released all fear of the future and accepted the path of the unknown. A path this person had embarked on five years ago, he seemed at peace with the unknowns of life and highly recommended this book. This book is a book of faith scattered with quotes from the bible and quotes from real life. Even if you are not a religious person I think you will enjoy this book. This book is about "trust", trust in the unknown, faith that there is a purpose in life, something we all can gain a source of strength from.

Ruthless Trust The Ragamuffin Path to God Brennan Manning 9780062517760 Books Reviews
I love Brennan Mannings down to earth writing style and his honest and open heart. He does an amazing job of connecting with the realities of the Christian walk as opposed to the sugar coated facade we often present to the world. We definitely need more authors like Brennan Manning who aren't afraid to be real about the Christian life and its many facets and struggles.
I've read a few books by Brennan Manning and am always amazed by his capacity to wrench me out of my unrecognized complacency. Perhaps it is the relentless awareness and examination of his own sloth, sadness, and ennui. I am always touched by his devotion to truth and willingness to square off with his personal dragons. I have been at this search, acceptance, and surrender for over forty years. But Manning's books, particularly this one, soften my heart, expand my courage, and renew my trust when I am feeling it slip. I can add nothing more wise or erudite than all the sensitive reviews thus far. I can say, though, that reading this book...if you are willing to accept how much you are loved by God, will absolutely change your heart and mind. This is a truly compelling and transformative work.
This is the Best Book Ever About the role of trust in the spiritual life. He takes no prisoners, attracts no victims. No room for self-pity here. At first, I was very hesitant to buy this book because I had read the book he is most famous for "The Gospel for Ragamuffins" which I felt was much too oriented towards Alcoholics Anonymous members. No, I am not an alcoholic and I found that this book was more suited to a general audience. He died recently, and we have lost a coherent and (certainly) passionate advocate for a living, vital faith in the contemporary world. This is the best argument I have ever read advocating a complete, whole-hearted, shameless trust in God Himself. His courage will undoubtedly strengthen yours. Bless his memory.
I read this book as I was going through a difficult time in my life. I have to be honest and tell you that I almost didn't finish the book after reading the first two chapters because I wasn't sure where Manning was going with it. Now I tell all my friends, "The first couple of chapters are a little hard to get through, but stick it out! Keep reading! It will be well worth it!" I have said that I trusted God in the past, and I really believed that I did; however, after experiencing a certain loss, I was afraid to pray and ask God for the desires of my heart that were in accordance with His will. I had difficulty trusting Him fully, although I would say that my love for Him hadn't changed. This book helped me to view God as a trustworthy, heavenly Abba Father. This book was an answer to prayer.
Opened my mind to a whole new way of thinking. Not about the core doctrines of salvation, but to just how vast, unknown, and invisible the Kingdom of God is at times. We all get clogged up with our own church experience and forget the infinite nature of the Living God. And the all inclusive Gospel through His Son Jesus Christ. The Son has come to SEEK and save the lost. The fallen nature of men has been given a way back to God...
Looking for a deeper relationship with God? Had one and want it back? Brennan Manning had the words that spoke to my very heart. His book is engaging and an easy read, but you might want to only take one chapter at a time and chew on it for a while. He draws wisdom from many faith traditions and seamlessly joins them into his theme of ruthless trust. It is edifying and challenging and as I come toward the end of this book, I find myself thinking that I should start over and read it again. But have already promised it to my son. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and have already urged a number of people to also read it.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is serious about his/her spirituality, particularly those who find trust in God not always at the level he/she would like.
Brennan Manning lays it all out there, from ordinary doubltfulness to serious sinfulness and how we can still learn to trust through them. He does this using his own life story as well as the marvelous stories of others. (Some of these stories he has related in former talks and books but, for me, each time I hear one, it seems to reach a deeper place.) I found all of the stories insightful and I feel fortunate for having read them.
I found the chapters so thought provoking I decided to read only one per day and then, at times, I reread and reread some portions of them. It is not a book I could skim through. Rather, even now, there are at least three chapters I want to read again.
Once again I offer my gratitude to Brennan Manning. He does not hide who he is but rather reveals himself and his wisdom so we may better know the relationship God wants and offers each of us now, as we are.
